Which museums are worth visiting?
Closest are the Mining Museum in Steinhaus, Prettau visitor mine, Taufers Castle, Maranatha and the Mineral Museum. Among the MMM sites, Ripa in Bruneck and Corones on Kronplatz are the most practical.

Cultural destinations in and near the valley
Prettau visitor mine
The mine train travels over a kilometre into the mountain. Advance booking, seasonal opening and warm clothing need to be considered.
Taufers Castle
The imposing castle above Sand in Taufers offers historic rooms, art and guided visits.
Maranatha and Mineral Museum
Nativity and folk art in Luttach together with minerals in St Johann make compact cultural or wet-weather visits.
Kasern Nature Park visitor centre
An exhibition, 3D relief, films and information explain nature, farming and life at the head of the valley.
How to organise the Messner Mountain Museums
MMM Ripa – Bruneck
The nearest MMM occupies Bruneck Castle and explores mountain peoples worldwide. It combines well with the old town and shopping.
MMM Corones – Kronplatz
On the Kronplatz summit plateau, the museum considers traditional mountaineering. Access depends on lift operation.
MMM Firmian – Bolzano
Sigmundskron Castle is the heart of the museum project and explores the relationship between people and mountains.
MMM Juval and MMM Ortles
Juval in the Vinschgau covers the myth of mountains; Ortles in Sulden focuses on ice, avalanches and polar expeditions. Both are long trips.
MMM Dolomites
Important for planning: the official MMM site currently lists MMM Dolomites as closed, so it is not recommended as a current destination.
